We are looking forward to an exciting year of challenging and interesting learning that will prepare us for our next adventure.
This term we are powering through three IPC topics: Roots, Shoots & Fruits; Out of Africa; and Extreme Survival. In Roots, Shoots & Fruits we have been looking at the function and structure of plants, what they need to grow and how we need them to live. In Out of Africa we will look at Earth from the earliest signs of life and work through geological time from the Cambrian period to the present day. In Extreme Survival, we will look at a variety of habitats and at the creatures that live in them.
For English, we are exploring the language features of explanation texts and have been practising writing our own texts explaining why or how things happen. We are using our new skills to write in IPC, explaining how photosynthesis occurs and why flower petals are so colourful.
We are running a specialist system for English and Maths this year across Year 5 and Year 6. Teacher Jess will be taking both year groups for Maths and Teacher Diane will be taking both for English.
In our Maths lessons, we will study a range of topics. Beginning with number and a knowledge of the place value system, we will learn and practise different techniques for calculating mentally and on paper. With this basis, we will then be able to gain an understanding of decimals and their place in measures. We will also study various other concepts of number patterns, like square and prime numbers.
