  Early Years Department Curriculum Overview

The British Curriculum Guidelines for the Foundation Stage form the basis for our programme of work in our Early Years Department. This Foundation Stage incorporates six areas of learning to ensure a broad and effective curriculum; Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Communication Language and Literacy, Mathematical Development, Knowledge and Understanding of the World, Physical Development and Creative Development.

Children in their early years of education develop their understanding, their learning and their skills by playing, talking, observing, planning, questioning, experiencing, testing, repeating, reflecting and responding to adults and each other. In our Early Years classes, we plan a range of activities and experiences to enable these skills to develop.

The key objective of a child’s learning experience at this age is that it is fun. Well-planned play is a crucial way in which children can learn with enjoyment and challenge.

In the Early Years, we follow a thematic approach to learning in which each of the six areas of learning are explored through a central theme. Young children learn holistically and this approach encourages integrated learning.

The six areas of learning are not necessarily taught as distinct timetabled subjects but are explored through the careful setting up of activities that encourage the development of more than one learning objective within an activity.
